History

The Bishop family history in the moving and storage industry dates back to the early 1900’s in Bluefield, WV when O. H. Bishop (Jim Bishop, Jr’s grandfather) bought his first truck.

O. H. Bishop’s two sons (O. H., Jr. & Jim, Sr.) both worked for their father’s company throughout the early 1900’s. Eventually both brothers moved to Maryland to start their own moving companies. Jim, Sr. started his company, “Safeway Moving & Storage”, in Baltimore in 1950. Jim, Jr. worked for his father’s company (alongside his brothers) until setting out on his own in the early 1970’s to create Eastern Moving & Storage Company.

In April of 1979 Eastern Moving & Storage Company was incorporated in Baltimore, Maryland by Jim Bishop, Jr. Its first location, on Pulaski Highway just north of the beltway, remains its primary location today.

In 2001, Eastern Moving expanded its operations by purchasing BelAir Moving & Storage Company in Joppa, MD and becoming an agent for Bekins. Eastern now owns over 200,000 square feet of office and warehouse space in multiple locations throughout Baltimore County. Today Eastern is owned and operated by Jim Bishop, Jr. and Jim Bishop, III.  We take great pride in carrying on the family tradition of excellence in the moving and storage industry.
